Doing these assignments had quite an impact on me as a student and as a mother. I have seven children from 12 to newborn. These assignments made me consider how I parent as well as how others parent around me. They made me reconsider the relationships that I have with my children and with those I love and associate with on a daily basis. When I was writing the paper on spanking, I had a chance to reflect on the opinions of some of my neighbors, friends and extended family members and how they view spanking. While I was writing, it did make me question if I am sometimes too strict, but over the course of writing I understand that I parent in a way that I see as loving, yet I hold my children to a certain standard. I always assumed that spanking was a normal part of life, but there are many that choose not to spank for their own reasons. I also found it interesting when I did the experiment with positive comments. Since writing that paper, I have made it a point to be more positive and use more positive comments with not only my children, but all those I associate with. It is amazing how differently a conversation can play out, or how good I feel about the interaction when positive comments are used more.
I picked these two assignments because I wanted to really evaluate what my view on the topics were, as well as challenge myself to be honest and possibly change anything that might have been controversial to my inner thinking. By doing these assignments I really feel that I was able to learn more about how to handle certain situations and really consider my actions and words that I use as a mother to a rising generation. I believe that both of these assignments illustrate that I am willing to learn from my own mistakes, that I want to have a better understanding of what I can do correctly, and that I am ultimately doing my best. The Marriage and Family Relationship class that I have participated in at Salt Lake Community College has been a huge learning experience for me. I have learned so much about myself and how I truly deal with the relationships that I have with those I love as well as associate with.
